Borders Abbeys Way

KML files available for Google Earth

Planning a walk on the Borders Abbeys Way is pretty fun. We haven't even walked the walk yet, and already we feel like we know the place.

Google Earth Screen Grab

There are already some good resources about the Borders Abbeys Way on the Internet, but what was missing was a mapped-out path for Google Earth.

Using the PDF booklet from the Scottish Borders Council web site, Martin read the description of each leg of the trip. He correlated the text with the maps from the booklet and a home-made map using OpenSpace API from the Ordnance Survey. Martin then carefully marked (as best he could -- no guarantees!) the Borders Abbeys Way on Google Earth.

Martin saved the routes from Google Earth as .kml files, which you can import into your own copy of Google Earth or Google Maps. If you upload the .kml files to your Google Maps account, you can even get them on your iPhone or iPod Touch!

The .kml files have been shared in an open-source repository called "git," which Martin thinks the British will find amusing.

If you are technically minded, please suggest (or better yet, implement) improvements to these data files. Should the path be a polygon instead of points? Did he miss a turn somewhere? Should points of interest be called out?
